In Development: Wool Picking Boxes
Many of us have seen the rise of processing prices at the wool mills and realized that at $8 to $9 per pound, plus shipping, our hand spun yarns are becoming too expensive in the marketplace. Also, if you are just wanting to drop spindle a few ounces as a meditative hobby, the minimums for mill carding are out of reach. Since the 1700s, these "cradle" or "slide-box" carders were popular in very rural places, and with non-mechanizing religious groups. Portable, simple to make, and effective means for pulling apart fibers for spinning, these Picking Boxes are not the equivalent of a $40,000 picking and carding operation, but they are affordable. Ours will run in the $100-$125 range, plus shipping.
